{"id":117,"date":"2006-10-27T09:45:34","date_gmt":"2006-10-27T09:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.bananasplit.info\/?p=117"},"modified":"2006-10-27T09:45:34","modified_gmt":"2006-10-27T09:45:34","slug":"is-music-worth-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stmellion.org\/?p=117","title":{"rendered":"Is music worth it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today <a href=\"theregister.co.uk\">The Register<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2006\/10\/26\/itnueski_banned\/\">reports<\/a> how Danish courts have ruled that an ISP (Tele2) must make best efforts to prevent people accessing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allofmp3.com\">allofmp3.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Power corrupts, but commercial power within the music industry seems to corrupt absolutely.  In this day and age it&#8217;s incredible to me that a commercial group such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riaa.com\">RIAA<\/a> can reach around the world and demand a foreign country censor a website that&#8217;s in another foreign country.  Governments don&#8217;t have this kind of international power!<\/p>\n<p>This is the first instance I&#8217;ve seen where a government has ordered an ISP to block access to a <i>specific<\/i> URL.  The result of it should be interesting for the following reasons:-<\/p>\n<li>ISP&#8217;s best efforts will be little more than lip service.  The world is full of open proxies.  There&#8217;s also <a href=\"tor.eff.org\">Tor<\/a> which completely anonymises the user.<\/li>\n<li>People don&#8217;t like censorship of this nature and they will rebel against it.  Those who never bothered to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allofmp3.com\">allofmp3.com<\/a> will now take an interest in it.  History has many examples where banned books and songs have become best sellers simply because they were banned.<\/li>\n<p>Everyone knows we need a music revolution.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riaa.com\">RIAA<\/a> can only stick by their old monopolistic ways for so long.
